  • LEADERSHIP ANNOUCEMENT
    Hello YUSD Families,
As many of you may know, our Superintendent Jim Berry recently announced his retirement.  In view of that, I couldn’t be more excited to introduce myself as your next Superintendent.  I am honored to be chosen for this role and appreciate the trust our Board of Education has shown in me.  Our district values being a part of a supportive team and there exists a strong tradition of keeping students at the center of all we do.  I am thankful to be able to continue this in my new role and lead our district into the future.
As a result of the leadership of our Board, Jim Berry, and our district and school leaders, I am inheriting a wonderfully successful organization.  Our district has many strengths, all of which I’ve had an opportunity to witness firsthand during my time as Principal at Jackson Street.  Leadership transitions present an opportunity for reflection and identifying positive areas for change.  I look forward to hearing from you to help us determine the priorities for our work ahead.
Along with my move to Superintendent beginning January 1st, I am proud to announce that Ms. Lorraine Joling will be joining me at the district office as the new Director of Educational Services.  Her long history in YUSD, strong leadership skills, and knowledge of the curriculum have made her an expert in supporting our students and staff with all components of teaching and learning.
Rounding out our district admin team is Amy Dunlap who will be continuing as Principal of Evergreen Elementary and as our Director of Special Education.  Ms. Dunlap is a professional with a passion for our youngest students.  Thank you Amy for your dedication to our district and families.
I am also proud to announce the selections of Ms. Sarah Jankowski as interim Principal and Ms. Kim Heilmann as interim Assistant Principal of Jackson Street.  They will serve in these positions for the remainder of the school year. Both Sarah and Kim have huge hearts for kids and are dedicated to serving their Ram family.  Please know, I am dedicated to building a culture of collaboration and transparency to ensure our continued success.  Near the end of the school year, we will go through a process to select the permanent leadership team for JSS and will solicit feedback and participation from students, staff, and parents.  Our goal is to accomplish this together!
And finally, please join me in welcoming our new school counselor, Alyssa Tudor.  Ms. Tudor was born and raised in our community and now returns to us with a wealth of experience in supporting students.  We are so excited to be able to offer this support for families and know she will be a valuable member of our district support team.
We are dedicated to helping your children succeed and look forward to the future.  Don’t hesitate to reach out to us, we're here for you!
On behalf of all of us at YUSD, we wish you Happy Holidays!
    Sincerely,

  • Dress Code & Cell Phone Policy Feedback

    Hello JSS Families and Staff,
We hope you enjoyed our Back to School Night and learned a lot about what we're trying to accomplish on campus.  We are very thankful for the opportunity to help raise the children of Yreka and Siskiyou county and look forward to a successful school year.

As your teachers mentioned, we are in the process of establishing policies and procedures through a collaborative approach, which includes staff and students!  Here is the link to our first School Policy DRAFT.  It includes a summary of the work staff and students have been doing and concludes with the policies (MAIN POINTS).

Please take a few minutes and read through the information.

Now we'd like to hear from everyone.  Please follow this link Dress Code and Cell Phone Policy Feedback and take a few minutes to complete our feedback form.  We plan to collect feedback until Friday, September 23, 2022.

  • Our Three Nuggets - 9/5/22

    Hello JSS Families,

     Nugget #1
Back to School Night - Our Back TSchool Night for ALL GRADES is Wednesday, September 7 from 5:30-6:30pm.  BTSN is primarily for Parents and Guardians to meet the teacher and learn about what the class has in store for the year.  Your students' teachers will be sending more information home soon.  Students DO NOT need to attend.  However, if leaving them home isn't an option, we will provide limited supervision on the playground.  Please let your teacher know if you will be able to attend without students.

     Nugget #2  - Water bottles
This year we have been providing students with water bottles during lunch.  Students have been very appreciative, especially during the hotter days.  However, this hasn't occurred without some challenges.  A few students have been abusing this privilege by spraying other students with water.  We would appreciate you checking in with your child and reminding them to just drink the water and then recycle the bottles.  Thanks for the support!

Nugget #3  - NO MINIMUM DAY THIS WEEK

Please feel free to let us know if you have any questions, thoughts, or concerns.  We are here for you!

  • Our Three Nuggets - 8/29/22

    Hello JSS Families,

Our staff theme this year is "Go For the Gold"

Establishing a theme for the year helps us focus on what's important and guides our work.  No matter what the theme is, we are always devoted to keeping students at the center of all we do.  For this to happen, we can't get bogged down in the details or try to do so much that we never really accomplish anything.  To help keep our focus on what's important, each staff member identified a main thing they want to work on and accomplish for the year.  As a result, these main things represent the
"Gold" we are all going for.

We believe providing clear communication, listening to feedback, and engaging staff, students, families and our community is crucial to student success. In order to keep you well informed and included in our work, we will be sending out a weekly message that is simple and focused on what's most important.  We call it our "Three Nuggets"  and this is our first edition!

Nugget #2 - Student Handbook Focus Groups
We are in the process of updating our student handbook.  The handbook includes policies and procedures as well as a lot of important information to help families and students be successful throughout the year.   We believe including students in this process is important, so this week we will be conducting student focus group meetings to hear what they think should be included.  We anticipate sharing a rough draft at BTSN to give families a chance to chime in as well.

Nugget #3 - Minimum Day Reminder

Our first minimum day went very smoothly, thank you everyone!  This is a reminder that our next minimum day is WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 31.  Students are dismissed at 1:15pm.

I hope the first week went well and this message helps prepare you for a great week!  Please feel free to let us know if you have any questions, thoughts, or concerns.

  • WELCOME BACK!

    Dear JSS Families,

It is my pleasure to welcome you back to school and I hope this finds you rested and ready for the 2022-2023 school year!

Needless to say, it has been a very eventful summer!  Between the fires, heat and staffing changes, we are all looking forward to the excitement of a new school year.  Our district maintenance department has been working tirelessly to install our new HVAC system, so we've had to adjust some things that we would normally do to begin the year.  Rest assured, our staff is committed to serving students and their families by working as a team to help each child reach their fullest potential.  Our focus is on student growth and on meeting each child exactly where they are in their academic journey. This means that your child will receive instruction that is appropriate to their needs...when they need it!  We are dedicated to creating a school environment and culture that hopefully leads to Jackson Street School being the “Greatest Place on Earth” for each and everyone who steps foot on our campus.

Families play a huge role in this. We urge you to take part as much as possible in the daily life of our school. Please consider volunteering in your child’s classroom, helping out your teacher or even joining our Yreka USD team. There are many areas where your help would be appreciated both at home and at school, depending on what your schedule permits. Don’t hesitate to contact our office about how to get involved.

Providing effective communication is a goal of ours this year.  To help with this, we have a new FACEBOOK page and our SCHOOL WEBSITE will be updated regularly.  Remember, your student's teacher is the best source of information to meet your needs.  Please know, our office staff is also ready to assist you and our School Administrative team is available to discuss any concerns you may have after you have connected with your child’s teacher.  We will be sending home more information in the first week of school, so check with your student, or visit our school website and Facebook page often.

I’m looking forward to a great year and to meeting all students and their families both at school and at Back to School Night!

    Sincerely,

    Rich Sullivan, Principal
